Every Reporter Needs To Understand Sharyl Attkisson’s Case Against The US Government

Actual Hacking: Every Reporter Needs To Understand Sharyl Attkisson’s Case Against The US Government

questioneverything2

Sharyl Attkisson was a star investigative reporter for CBS News. After two decades at the network, she resigned on March 10, 2014.

Among the controversial stories she covered: the Fast and Furious gun-walking program, in which the government “purposely allowed licensed firearms dealers to sell weapons to illegal straw buyers, hoping to track the guns to Mexican drug cartel leaders and arrest them” (LA Times, 10/3/11); the Benghazi attacks and murders; the CDC fraud in grossly overestimating the number of Swine Flu cases in America.

Attkisson now hosts a weekly television news program, Full Measure, for the Sinclair Broadcast Group. She writes at sharylattkisson.com.

Attkisson is also engaged in a struggle with the federal government.

Attkisson writes: “I just filed my latest appeal to the FBI’s improper withholding of my FBI file. You may not know it, but every American citizen—even a lowly reporter—is entitled to see his FBI file, if one exists.”

I queried Attkisson about this yesterday, and she replied: “I find it unacceptable that the federal government, and specifically the nation’s top law enforcement agency (DOJ), would be party to improperly—and I believe unlawfully—withholding public and personal materials that we (not they) own.”

For some reason, Attkisson isn’t permitted to see her FBI file. Why? The answer may lie in the government’s role as a hacker. A hacker of Attkisson’s computers.

Attkisson writes at her website: “I have a separate federal lawsuit underway against the federal government over illegal surveillance of my work and home computers by intruders using software proprietary to a U.S. intelligence agency. The intrusions were detected and confirmed by three independent forensics exams in 2013.”

“So far, the government has not cooperated with my lawsuit. For example, without even filing the required motion, government officials failed to show up for a properly-noticed deposition in the case.”

Here, from a press release, are details about the hack of Attkisson’s computers:

“On December, 27, 2014, Investigative Journalist Sharyl Attkisson filed administrative claims under the Federal Tort Claims Act against the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Postal Service, and certain unnamed employees and/or agents of the federal government. Shortly thereafter, a lawsuit was filed in the District of Columbia alleging certain violations of Attkisson’s constitutional rights based on information implicating the federal government in illegal electronic monitoring and surveillance of her home and business computers and phones.”

“As outlined in the claims, three separate computer forensics exams revealed that intruders used sophisticated, remote capabilities to monitor Attkisson’s work. The intruders installed and periodically ‘refreshed’ software used to exfiltrate data, obtain Attkisson’s passwords to various personal and work accounts, access the CBS News computer system, and monitor Attkisson’s audio using a Skype account. Forensics also revealed evidence of U.S. government-related involvement in the surveillance.”

“Through a Freedom of Information Act request, Attkisson learned that the F.B.I. opened a case on her computer intrusions in 2013, listing her as the victim, but the agency failed to interview her in the investigation or even notify her that one had been opened. To date, U.S. government officials have failed to fully cooperate with Attkisson’s efforts to learn about the intrusions, and have failed to fully respond to numerous requests to help provide information necessary to learn the truth. As a consequence of the government’s choice to ignore Attkisson’s requests, Attkisson and her family have chosen the only available option left to them.”

Yesterday, I asked Attkisson: in your opinion, why were your computers hacked?

She wrote: “On the lawsuit over the hacking: The reason I had my computers analyzed in the first place is because government sources had approached me and told me I was likely being ‘surveilled’ due to the reporting I had been conducting, especially some of my CBS News stories that were published online. They specifically mentioned my Benghazi reporting, which I began in fall of 2012. The forensics analyses were able to determine multiple unauthorized remote intrusions of my computers using software (proprietary to a federal government agency) that occurred prior to my Benghazi reporting, however. One such intrusion, for example, occurred in February 2012 (we have the date, time and method of entry) and another in July 2012. Stories I covered during this time period included Green Energy Waste stories that the Obama administration worked very hard to stop from airing on CBS, as well as Fast and Furious reports, among others. Among other details, the forensics exams were able to determine that the intruders not only accessed the CBS system, and used Skype to surreptitiously listen in on conversations, but also examined several files and photos related to Fast and Furious.”

“In addition to two separate forensics exams that I had conducted, CBS hired a forensics company that confirmed the remote intrusions. The analyst informed CBS, among other things, ‘I have definitive evidence that shows commands were run from Sharyl’s user account that she did not personally authorize during the timeframe of concern’ and ‘This history has been deliberately removed from Sharyl’s hard drive’ by a third party.”

—Read Attkisson’s next paragraph carefully. It’s explosive. It indicates Dept. of Justice (DOJ) lying and cover-up:

“A fourth forensics exam conducted by DOJ Inspector General of a different computer (only my personal computer that I asked them to examine in hopes they would recognize the government software, CBS would not give them the CBS computers in question) also confirmed the suspicious activities and that a third party deliberately removed files from my personal computers to cover their tracks. However, this information was omitted from a summary the DOJ IG released, which instead made it incorrectly sound as though intrusions had been ruled out. (The DOJ IG will not lawfully respond to FOIA requests for the documentation showing the investigators confirming the suspicious activities. I know the documents exist because the investigators let me review them during the investigation and briefed me on their findings.)”

“The 2012 intrusion dates I mentioned were NOT the sum total of intrusions—they were two dates we know of during which software was planted in my computers. The software was then used on an ongoing basis to access files, watch my keystrokes, etc.”

CBS agrees that Attkisson’s computers were hacked. Here is an excerpt from an August 7, 2013, article posted at the CBS news site:

“CBS News announced Friday that correspondent Sharyl Attkisson’s computer was hacked by ‘an unauthorized, external, unknown party on multiple occasions,’ confirming Attkisson’s previous revelation of the hacking.”

“CBS News spokeswoman Sonya McNair said that a cybersecurity firm hired by CBS News ‘has determined through forensic analysis’ that ‘Attkisson’s computer was accessed by an unauthorized, external, unknown party on multiple occasions in late 2012’.”

“Evidence suggests this party performed all access remotely using Attkisson’s accounts. While no malicious code was found, forensic analysis revealed an intruder had executed commands that appeared to involve search and exfiltration of data. This party also used sophisticated methods to remove all possible indications of unauthorized activity, and alter system times to cause further confusion. CBS News is taking steps to identify the responsible party and their method of access.”

“Several months ago, Attkisson had reported suspected intrusions of her computers, including her CBS News work computer, prompting CBS News to hire a firm to look into the hacking.”

My comment: As indicated at the beginning of this article, Attkisson is unable to see her FBI file. The FBI won’t show it to her. This is a breach of law. They won’t show it to her because it would reveal the FBI and DOJ stance on her investigative work at CBS. They didn’t like her work. They considered it a threat. They considered it an exposure of truths they wanted kept under wraps, relating to Fast and Furious, Benghazi, Green Energy Waste, etc.

That FBI file would lend further strength to Attkisson’s claim that the Dept. of Justice has been lying about what they found when they investigated the hacking of her computers.

For example: They found that some of their own people (FBI/DOJ) and/or people at other government agencies had done the hacking.

Major media consider this story “dead until further notice.” But independent journalists all over the world shouldn’t. They should cover it aggressively and keep the pot boiling, and make sure the public understands what is at stake: the right to report actual news, free from government interference and intimidation.

And the right to call government on the carpet, in court, under oath, to account for their crimes.

Journalist Who Exposed CIA Found Dead

Hero Journalist Who Exposed CIA Infiltration and Manipulation of Media Found Dead

Udo Ulfkotte, a brave, selfless, hero died on Friday at the age of 56. The legacy he leaves behind is one that gives context to today’s geopolitical relations between the United States and Russia.

Ulfkotte was a world-class German journalist, working for a major Germany newspaper, who came out and exposed how the mainstream media lies for the CIA.

In an interview with RT in October 2014, Ulfkotte explained the CIA’s practice of manipulation and bribery:

“I’ve been a journalist for about 25 years, and I was educated to lie, to betray, and not to tell the truth to the public.

“But seeing right now within the last months how the German and American media tries to bring war to the people in Europe, to bring war to Russia — this is a point of no return and I’m going to stand up and say it is not right what I have done in the past, to manipulate people, to make propaganda against Russia, and it is not right what my colleagues do and have done in the past because they are bribed to betray the people, not only in Germany, all over Europe.”

Ulfkotte also revealed that he was forced to publish the work of intelligence agencies under his name, and he was threatened with termination if he did not comply.

The main reason he said he came out was because the intelligence agencies were pushing disinformation in order to push for war between Europe and Russia.

Ulfkotte’s death was allegedly the result of a heart attack. However, he was aware the possible repercussions that could come from what he was exposing. In an interview with Russia Insider, he said:

“When I told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (Ulfkotte’s newspaper) that I would publish the book, their lawyers sent me a letter threatening with all legal consequences if I would publish any names or secrets — but I don’t mind. You see, I don’t have children to take care of.”

He knew he would face persecution from the state, and he did. Ulfkotte told RT that German prosecutors searched his house on at least six separate occasions.

Similar information was disclosed through the Church Committee Senate hearings that happened in 1975 with Sen. Frank Church leading the way and exposing the fact that the same thing happened in the U.S. with Operation Mockingbird.

Udo Ulfkotte: European media writing pro-US stories under CIA pressure (more on the subject here):

This all brings us back to now, where we are seeing intelligence agencies and the mainstream media pushing for war with Russia, and clashing against Trump.

Ulfkotte also revealed the fact that there are mainstream media journalists who have been trained as CIA operatives, which is a topic WeAreChange has covered extensively over the years.

Also at the Church hearings, it was revealed that the CIA has developed a poison dart gun that “gives deadly heart attacks and leaves no trace.”

We don’t have all of the facts, and we don’t know exactly what happened to Ulfkotte, but we do know that he was a hero who put everything on the line in order for you to know the truth.

Cashless Monetary System means Absolute Power over you

Why the Governments Will Implement the Cashless Monetary System

Of all who are working to bring your nation into a cashless monetary system, the desire to do this is greatest in the hearts of those who would rule over us and the world.

Governments, Bankers, Elites and Capitalists will become more Richer and more powerful but the average citizens will bear the burnts.

Absolute Power

Those who dream of absolute power over the masses realize that in order to achieve their goal, it is necessary to have absolute control of the world’s economic system. Tyrants know that if they can effectively separate every individual from his or her wealth, requiring the approval of the system for every financial transaction, that they can control the world. They have been, and are, continually working to develop and implement this system.

While banks, businesses, and others will gain financially from an electronic cashless monetary system, government will exponentially increase its power over the people.

conspiracy-quotes-lord-acton-absolute-power

The people who wield power within government are those who are most able to effect this fundamental change in the way the world does business. This is because it will be those in government who will determine, by law, the type of system that will be used to control buying and selling and the form of currency that will be used.

Let us consider a few of the reasons why those who desire power over others want to implement a system of trade that they can control completely.

“Government” Money

Since government does not produce wealth, it must take the money it needs to operate by taxing those who produce wealth; that is, those who work.

The innumerable layers of taxes that have been heaped on the worker have caused him to render unto Caesar much of his hard earned wealth. Not only is the worker’s income taxed by the government, but in most cases he must pay taxes on his income to the state and sometimes even to the local government.

Property taxes must be paid regularly if he wants to keep his property. Other taxes are imbedded in the cost of the goods and services and are paid by the consumer when an item is purchased. Then there are sales taxes that must be paid to state or local governments when an item is purchased. All taxes are paid to the government, and while few people know it, all taxes come out of the pockets of those who produce wealth — again the workers.

While we like to think of ourselves as “the land of the free”, the truth is that there is almost nothing we can do that isn’t either taxed, or regulated in some way by some level of government.

The Income Tax and Power

The income tax system as it now exists is one of the most burdensome, corrupt, confusing, and oppressive methods of taxation ever devised by man. One reason for this is that the system is used not only for the collection of money to operate the government, but it is also a mechanism by which those who are in power may increase their power. It is so complex that it is understood by no one. It is easily manipulated by those who write the laws and has been used by politicians to reward friends and punish enemies.

Over the years, it has metastasized so that its tentacles now reach into every part of our lives, and the farther it reaches the more it controls.

From time to time many have suggested, and some have worked very hard, to replace this monstrosity with tax systems that would be simpler and less intrusive. All of these attempts have failed. The reason every attempt to replace the graduated income tax with some other form of taxation has failed can be summed up with one word: power. The graduated income tax gives those who control it the power to control every segment of the economy and thereby the ability to control every part of our society and even the behavior of individuals.

when-should-nri-file-income-tax-returns-in-india

They say it would enable our economy to grow by leaps and bounds and would increase our liberty and privacy, but it would actually increase the power of those who use the present system of taxation to oppress and control the people.

Under our present system of taxation, every part of a person’s life is open to the government. The requirements of reporting income and expenditures for tax purposes creates a record of a company’s or an individual’s life. The government requires that any and all information that is demanded by the tax collecting agencies be supplied to them. This information gives the government the ability to examine not only a person’s financial dealings but their personal and political lives as well.

With the present system, there are various tax rates, deductions, exemptions, and tax credits, enabling those who write the tax laws to exert forces upon the economy, society in general, organizations, and even the individual. Sometimes this is done in order to force industry and individuals to make decisions based upon tax considerations rather than what would otherwise be best for the business or the individual.

The power to reward friends and punish enemies is perhaps the most misused power derived from this complicated and easily manipulated system. Many favors can be bestowed upon those who support the right party, politician, or program. Much misery and even financial ruin can be visited upon those who don’t.

The Collection of Taxes

In order to make certain that people don’t spend their earnings before they meet their tax obligations, employers are required to withhold a portion of each employee’s earnings. The money that is withheld from the employee’s earnings is sent by the employer to the government’s tax–collecting agencies. This enables the tax–collecting agencies to claim their share of a person’s earnings before the person gets possession of their earnings.

Problems Collecting Taxes

When it comes to the payment of taxes, companies and persons who are self employed operate under a different set of rules. The rules under which a company, or someone who is self employed are based somewhat on the honor system. This system requires them to pay taxes based on their estimated income.

This gives them access to their money before the tax–collecting agencies of the government. This arrangement means that the government must rely on the honest reporting of income by companies and those who are self-employed. It is also gives the dishonest taxpayer opportunity to conceal income. This is especially so when the business is conducted on a cash basis.

Ever since there have been taxes, there have been those who evade the payment of taxes. Government has had to implement enforcement measures to ensure that it collects the amount of money it demands of the people. Those who are charged with collecting taxes are always seeking better and more efficient ways to collect the revenue they believe should be paid to the government.

If the government becomes lax in the collection of taxes, then few, if any, people would pay taxes. The age old problem for governments when it comes to tax collection is that with cash or some other medium of exchange that allows individuals to deal directly with others, transactions are easily concealed from the government. Many people attempt to conceal profits from the tax–collecting agencies of the government by simply failing to report income. Also, by its very nature, income derived from illegal activities is not reported, unless it is reported as having come from some other activity that is legal. The fact that there is a great amount of economic activity concealed from the government creates problems in the area of tax collection.

To minimize tax fraud, the tax collecting agencies must develop accounting procedures and investigative methods that will ensure all income is reported. This is a very complicated and costly undertaking, since it requires the creation a huge bureaucracy which must try to monitor all economic activity. If tax–collecting agencies had a way of knowing about every transfer of money or goods from one entity to another, tax fraud would be eliminated. This would result in a huge windfall of money for the government as a result of increased collections. Tax evasion, though, can never be entirely eliminated as long as our present economic system is in place, because financial transactions can still be conducted privately by the use of cash, or the transfer of other items of value.

No Place to Hide Wealth

Once the cashless monetary system is in place, hidden cash transactions will no longer be possible because cash will no longer exist.

All financial activity will take place within the computers of the new electronic economic system. Every financial transaction, no matter how small, whether it involves funds credited to, or debited from a person’s account, will be known by the government. All income and expenditures will be carefully monitored and examined by the government’s computers. The tax–collecting agencies will know all there is to know about every company’s or individual’s financial dealings. They will know the sources of all income. They will also know when, how, and where all money is spent. This will ensure that taxes are paid on all income.

Such a system will enable governments to subject everyone to a continual financial strip search.

Instant Tax Collection

Since all currency will consist of electronic credits that cannot be removed from the system, the tax–collecting agencies will no longer have to depend on voluntary reporting of income by companies or those who are self-employed.

The government will not have to rely on the honesty of those who are reporting income. Tax–collecting agencies, by the use of computers, will be able to immediately calculate for themselves the amount of tax owed by companies and the self-employed.

464778-taxcollage

This will be done by comparing revenues to expenditures. Once the amount of tax owed is determined, the amount will be automatically debited from the financial account of the person or business. This will enable the government to claim the taxes that it determines are owed on a more frequent basis than the present system. Tax payments will be transferred from the taxpayer’s account to the government as frequently as the tax–collecting agencies desire. This means that the government will be able to confiscate money on a daily basis, if this is the desire of those who collect taxes. This will prevent a company or an individual from coming up short when taxes are due. These features of the cashless system will eliminate the problem of delinquent tax payments. It will also eliminate tax evasion.

Maintaining the Money Supply

Manufacturing paper currency and coins is a very expensive task. Physical currency must be designed and manufactured in such a way as to make counterfeiting as difficult as possible. It must also be manufactured in sufficient quantities to supply the demand of the economy. Since physical money wears out with usage, recalling and replacing worn currency is a continual process. Distribution of money once it is created is expensive in that it must be transported, and security must be provided as it is moved from the treasury to the banks.

Since much of our economy’s business is already transacted electronically, only a portion of the money that is presently in circulation actually exists as paper currency and coinage. Those who control the monetary system know that elimination of all paper money and coins is necessary in order to obtain the power they desire.

This transition is already well underway.

First of all, the creation of electronic credits is much easier and faster than creating physical money. Creating electronic credits and adding them to the money supply is a very simple task that could be accomplished with a few keystrokes on a computer’s keyboard or by a program that will make automatic adjustments to the money supply. It does not involve the purchase of expensive paper, inks, or metal as does the creation of physical money. It does not require complicated and expensive printing presses or dies. It also eliminates the lag between the decision to adjust the money supply and the actual adjustment.

Electronic currency is not subject to wear and tear so it never needs to be replaced. While physical money must be transported from place to place, electronic currency is moved instantaneously to any place on earth through communication networks. By eliminating paper currency and coins and replacing them with electronic currency, the huge expense of creating and maintaining the physical money supply will be eliminated.

Controlling the Economy through Wage and Price Controls

Since all commerce will be conducted within the closed electronic monetary system, wages, the prices of all goods and services, as well as the profit margins of companies could be set at particular levels or within certain ranges, there are many who subscribe to the notion that the pressures of supply and demand can be regulated in this way. With a closed monetary system, controlling wages and prices will be very easy, and the temptation to use this power to attempt to control inflation and other economic pressures will be too great to resist.

income-tax-slab-rates

Since all transfers of funds must be approved by the system, any wage, price, or profit margin that is deemed too high will result in the transaction either being refused or automatically adjusted to be within the allowed limits. This will be the end of free enterprise and will eventually reduce the availability of goods and services.

Cashless Monetary System + RFID = Absolute Control

The main objective of tyrants is to have the ability to force the populous to comply with every command. This goal will be attained when absolute control of all buying and selling is achieved by the convergence of the closed cashless monetary system and the RFID system of inventory control.

This will be done by interfacing these two systems so they will perform as one system.

To accomplish this goal requires that the transition to a cashless monetary system be completed, and for all items produced or offered for sale to be identified with RFID chips. This will mean that in order for an item to be sold or for ownership of an item to be transferred from one person to another, it must contain a chip and the item must be registered with a database that is controlled by the government. This will be done to eliminate any possibility of a black market that might circumvent the closed monetary system of trade.

050329_001

Once this system becomes operational, buying and selling apart from the closed monetary system will become impossible.

Bartering will also be impossible, since ownership of items will be recorded within the system. Money laundering will also become extremely difficult, if not impossible The reason for this will be that since the government will have an inventory of all items produced and all items possessed by individuals, they cannot be sold unless they are deleted from the inventory of one person’s possessions and added to another person‘s inventory.

If an item does not have an RFID chip registering it with the inventory system, it cannot be sold. This will be because when credits are to be transferred from one person’s financial account to another person’s financial account, there must be a corresponding transfer of goods which takes place at the time of sale. Even items offered for private sale must first be tagged with an RFID chip and then registered with the government‘s inventory system before there will be an authorization of payment to the seller. Unless these steps are performed, the item cannot be sold.

With the closed cashless system in place, those who control the system can implement any law or program they desire. It will be a simple matter to use the closed monetary system as the engine of social and political change, and as the weapon for enforcement.

If a particular activity is deemed to be good by the powers that be, then it will be permitted, or even encouraged.

spying

This will be done by allowing the approved activity through the use funds stored within the system. If an activity is determined to be in inappropriate, for example certain religious or political activities, then the funds that are needed by the individual or group to engage in these activities will be denied.

All expenditures, and therefore every activity, will not only be monitored, but must also meet the approval of the authorities who will control the closed cashless monetary system.

Once the closed monetary and RFID systems are completed and interfaced one with the other, those who would rule the world will have absolute economic power over us, and with this power they will force compliance with their edicts. The cashless/RFID system will enable the ruling power to do this without a large military or police force.

more to come…

Internet Censorship in US and Europe Is Coordinated

Internet Censorship in US and Europe Is Coordinated

The EU Is Warning American Tech Giants to Crack Down on Hate Speech Now  …  “They will have to act quickly and make a strong effort in the coming months.” U.S. tech giants including Facebook, Twitter, Google’s YouTube and Microsoft will have to act faster to tackle online hate speech or face laws forcing them to do so, the European Commission said on Sunday. -Reuters

Western governments are censoring speech in Europe and the US, an obvious pattern that clearly shows coordination.

In the US, there is a congressional effort to fund intel agencies that will investigate alternative media for ties to Russian propaganda. Such investigations , if they occur, will  retard this sector and make further, free-reporting difficult.

In Europe, efforts to control speech and reporting are actually being aimed at American communication enterprises such as Google, YouTube and Microsoft (see excerpt above).

More:

The European Union (EU) executive’s warning comes six months after the companies signed up to a voluntary code of conduct to take action in Europe within 24 hours, following rising concerns triggered by the refugee crisis and terror attacks.

This included removing or disabling access to the content if necessary, better cooperation with civil society organizations and the promotion of “counter-narratives” to hate speech.

The code of conduct is largely a continuation of efforts that the companies already take to counter hate speech on their websites, such as developing tools for people to report hateful content and training staff to handle such requests.

Top powers in the US and Europe will not likely admit coordination to crack down on Internet news and views but this is obviously what’s happening.

It is true that European censorship justifications have a longer history. Complaints about terrorism and hate speech have been voiced for several years. In the US, the sudden emergence of concern over Russian influence on ‘Net-based media is a new phenomenon.

Nonetheless, the House has just passed a bill to fund investigations into Russian influence on American media (see here). Such investigations might involve the tracking of so-called Alt.right “hate speech” as well.

hero-dm-ht

Western efforts to “control” the Internet will no doubt adopt certain Chinese solutions over time. In China the Internet is actively being used as an agency of repression. Citizens are to receive ‘Net-based “grades” based on docility and how well they obey laws and generally fit in.

The larger question as governments crack down on ‘Net-based speech is whether or not people’s awareness of what is actually going on in their societies will transcend censorship.

History seems to show that after the Gutenberg Press launched an explosion of new ideas in printed form it took Western governments (and the controllers behind them) many centuries to regain control – 400 or 500 years as a matter of fact.

Western governments face similar problems now. A whole generation of individuals has absorbed a new way of thinking promulgated by the ‘Net. This is one reason approval of mainstream media is in the single digits while up to 50 percent or more (in the US, anyway) admit to belief in “conspiracy theories” – versions of important events not dictated by government and secret forces operating behind government.

In aggregate these views posit a different society than the current one. Today’s society is an outgrowth of World War II reorganization and depends heavily on the dictates of massive governments and even larger corporate enterprises.

‘Net-based alternative sociopolitical organization tends to criticize such titanic social solutions and is often more libertarian based. The idea is that culture ought to dictate social organization and economic, political and even military control ought to be organized from the ground up instead of top down.

These two models are on a collision course. Despite the intention of elites to wipe out the emergence of alternate thinking regarding social control, the insights that have been re-established via Internet communication are not going to easily or rapidly dissipate. In fact, censorship will likely reinforce their validity and emphasize their credibility.

A whole different world view is now part of people’s consciousness, certainly in the West and likely elsewhere too, even China. Such alternative insights about money, power and politics are extraordinarily difficult to eradicate. Ideas of freedom, local authority and individual responsibility are not easily stamped out once they have gained – or regained – credence.

In this case, the Western intelligentsia has been reawakened en masse to an alternative cultural model that has its roots in thousands of years of practice and application. These cultural solutions stand clearly in opposition to the current sociopolitical formula that emphasizes bigness and technocratic authoritarianism.

Anti-war, pro-individual freedom, private money and private justice, these precepts have found their way into intellectual circulation once more. They are extraordinarily compelling and will continue to have an influence far beyond what is easily apparent.

As this article was being posted, ZeroHedge reported that Naked Capitalism’s Yves Smith threatened The Washington Post with a defamation suit and demanded a retraction for reporting that the website was in league with Russian interests. We’re actually surprised a class action lawsuit hasn’t been launched as numerous websites have been smeared by these accusations. Could such a lawsuit be aimed at Congress as well (despite sovereign immunity)?

Conclusion: History may well repeat in the 21st century, but not necessarily in ways current elites are hoping.

The cash crunch may paralyse economic activities in India

The cash crunch arising out of demonetisation is expected to paralyse economic activity in the short-term, and the 2017-18 GDP growth is likely to take a hit

Out od service ATMs

According to a report by Ambit Capital, GDP growth is likely to decelerate from 6.4 percent in first half of this fiscal to 0.5 percent in the second half with a distinct possibility of GDP growth contracting in third quarter of this fiscal.

Reuters

From October-December 2016 until October-December 2019, Ambit Capital expects a strong ‘formalisation effect’ to play out as nearly half of the non-tax paying businesses in the informal sector (40 percent share in GDP) become unviable and cede market share to their organised sector counterparts.

“We expect this dynamic to crimp GDP growth in India in FY18 as well and hence we cut our FY18 GDP growth estimate to 5.8 percent (from 7.3 percent),” the report said.

The demonetisation move is expected to disrupt economic activity in the short term, especially those segments where cash-based transactions are the norm like real estate, unsecured lending, real estate construction services and building materials.

“Whilst in the near-term, we expect these businesses to suffer, over the next couple of years the strongest players in these sectors will gain market share as competition from unscrupulous/unorganised players reduces,” the report added.

A report by Care Ratings titled ‘Impact of demonetisation on GDP growth in FY17’, said, the services sector is expected to be affected the most in these economic activities. Importantly, these losses, due to their inherent nature, can’t be recovered in the next quarter. For rest of manufacturing, demand side issues would exist till such times conditions stabilize and could get reversed in Q4. Hence, Industry is also expected to be impacted which will be more significant in the first 2-3 weeks post the announcement.

While consumer goods’ companies are also feeling the impact right now, with tight liquidity in the markets, the demand is likely to come back by next quarter. “Losses incurred would be recovered in the next quarter, particularly for consumer goods where there would be only deferment of purchase.

Even the SMEs industry will have a major problem in adjusting production schedules as both payments and receipts flow in cash given their structures.

According to the Care Ratings’ report, as per initial estimate, overall GDP growth would be affected by 0.3-0.5 percent.

“As a response to the slowing GDP growth, we expect the RBI to consider rate cuts of 25-50 bps over the second half of FY17 itself,” the Ambit said.

The Monetary Policy Committee headed by RBI Governor Urjit Patel last month cut benchmark interest rates by 0.25 percent to 6.25 percent. The next RBI policy review is on 7 December.

Foreign brokerage Bank of America-Merrill Lynch sees the demonetisation exercise impacting the country’s growth in the next two quarters, and estimates GDP to fall by 50 basis points.

“The economy has had a heart attack this quarter. We expect the impact of this to resonate for at least two quarters, impacting GDP by 50 basis points for the fiscal year,” The Economic Times report said quoting Indranil Sen Gupta, chief India economist at Bank of America-Merrill Lynch.

Rating agency ICRA has cut GDP forecast by 40 basis points, while HDFC Bank trimmed growth estimates to 7.3 percent from 7.8 percent earlier. Another credit rating firm Crisil, which earlier estimated GDP growth at 7.5 percent, now sees downside risk from the demonetisation move.

In between:

Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday attacked the Narendra Modi government for obliterating everything about India before it came to power and said it believes there was no civilisation prior to that.

P Chidambaram. PTI

“As far as the present government is concerned, India began, civilisation began only on May 26, 2014,” Chidambaram said at the Tatas-run Mumbai LitFest today while addressing a panel discussion on Banking for the bottom billion.

The former finance minister was referring to the NDA government not adding the 13 crore no-frills accounts, opened during the UPA regime, with the Jan Dhan ones that were opened during the present government’s financial inclusion drive.

While the UPA government had opened these accounts between 2004 and 2014 under its financial inclusion drive,Prime Minister Modi had relaunched this under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana on 28 August 2014, under which around 25.51 crore accounts have been opened so far.

Chidambaram noted that as many as 13 crore no-frills accounts were opened under the UPA rule, but are blacked outnow.

“These 13 crore accounts which we opened between 2004 and 2014, under the guidance of C Rangarajan, as far as the (present) government is concerned, they don’t exist, they are blacked out,” he said, adding that “Jan Dhan is only another name for no-frills accounts”.

The Congress leader praised the government’s efforts for this financial inclusion drive, but said by simply opening an account, one’s behaviour can’t be changed.

“People must have money to deposit in the account, they must have a need to borrow from that account, otherwise account will remain dormant.

“So, how does our bankers jugaad sense work? The government pulls them up for saying dormant accounts, they put one rupee from their pockets in those accounts,” he said.

Earlier in the day, he had said the after-effects of the demonetisation will last longer than expected as it was carried out without much thinking and he also doubted if the government had consulted its Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian on this before taking the decision.

“You are seeing the first-order effect of withdrawing, sucking out 86 percent of the currency in circulation from the market. The first order will continue for several weeks now. Then, you will see the second-order effect,” he said.

“My suspicion is the only knowledgeable economist in the government Arvind Subramanian was not consulted,” he said.

Demonetization may leads to Riots On The Streets in India

We Will Have Riots On The Streets Supreme Court Warns Government On Demonetisation

For the second time in a week, the Central Government in India has faced tough questions on the notes ban from the Supreme Court, which cautioned on Friday: “We will have riots on the streets.”

The Supreme Court today declined the request of the central government that it stay all petitions against demonetisation pending in various high courts and other forums stating that people have a right to approach courts when they have grievances.

 supreme-court_660_020913075242

Chief Justice of India TS Thakur said petitions challenging the ban on Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 notes indicate the magnitude of the problem.

“You have scrapped 500 and 1,000, but what happened to the 100 rupee note?” the Chief Justice asked the government, referring to the daily scramble for cash across the country and the punishing queues outside banks and ATMs.

ATMs, the government replied, need to be recalibrated because they have a “single drawer” for Rs. 100 notes. For thousands, this has meant that cash dried up long before they could reach the top of the line after several hours.

 queue1-007

The court had more questions on the currency ban announced suddenly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 8 to check tax evasion and black or untaxed money. In the past 10 days, there have been several additional announcements to ease the crisis for people.

“The last time you said you are working out relief but you have reduced the withdrawal amount to 2,000. What’s the problem? Is it a printing problem?” Justice Thakur asked the government.
The government earlier this week reduced the Rs. 4,500 limit for the exchange of notes at banks to Rs. 2,000, saying it would enable more people to get cash.

Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said: “Not only printing… it has to be transported to lakhs of branches across the country and ATMs have to re-calibrated.”

Mr Rohatgi added that the government did grant relief to farmers, families planning weddings and small traders.

Representing one of the petitioners, senior lawyer Kapil Sibal, a senior Congress leader, alleged that people in villages and in the northeastern states are unable to withdraw money.

 03-1449142735-justice-tirath-singh

The government lawyer retorted: “Mr Sibal is making a political issue here. You can’t convert this court into a political platform. Let him go outside and address people as a Congress person.”

There was a verbal duel between Rohatgi and Kapil Sibal, who represented one of the several petitioners. While Sibal said that the ordinary people have been put in miserable situation, the Attorney General alleged that Sibal was politicising the issue for the benefit of his party.

“This is very serious. This will require great consideration. People have become frantic for money, people are affected. We will have riots in the streets

The court then asked both parties to submit data justifying their claims — that the situation was easing as claimed by the government and it was as bad as ever as claimed by the petitioners. The court will examine the data next Friday.

“Anti-Establishment” Trump must Pardon Edward Snowden

An “Anti-Establishment” Trump Should Pardon Edward Snowden

During his first days as president, Barack Obama pledged to protect government whistleblowers. In fact, Change.org even highlighted this stance saying, “Often the best source of information about waste, fraud, and abuse in government is an existing government employee committed to public integrity and willing to speak out. Such acts of courage and patriotism, which can sometimes save lives and often save taxpayer dollars, should be encouraged rather than stifled.”

Oddly, or rather conveniently enough, this section of the webpage disappeared just days after the first round of Edward Snowden leaks.

In September Edward Snowden has set out the case for Barack Obama granting him a pardon before the US president leaves office in January, arguing that the disclosure of the scale of surveillance by US and British intelligence agencies was not only morally right but had left citizens better off.

Which Obama had denied straight forward at the time.

Today He’s been asked again;

PRESIDENT OBAMA INDICATED on Friday that he won’t pardon NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden

In an interview with Obama published on Friday, German newspaper Der Spiegel asked: “Are you going to pardon Edward Snowden?” Obama replied: “I can’t pardon somebody who hasn’t gone before a court and presented themselves, so that’s not something that I would comment on at this point.”

But P.S. Ruckman, editor of the Pardon Power blog said Obama is wrong to suggest he couldn’t pardon Snowden if he wanted to. Ruckman noted that Obama has previously only granted pardons and commutations to people who have already been convicted. “I just think what he may have better said is: ‘I prefer that he present himself to a court and then we’ll talk turkey.’ But technically in terms of the Constitution, there are no restrictions at all.”

The operative Supreme Court ruling, from 1886, states that “The power of pardon conferred by the Constitution upon the President is unlimited except in cases of impeachment. It extends to every offence known to the law, and may be exercised at any time after its commission, either before legal proceedings are taken or during their pendency, or after conviction and judgment. The power is not subject to legislative control.”

Obama said that although Snowden “raised some legitimate concerns,” he “did not follow the procedures and practices of our intelligence community.

Now the table is turning towards Donald Trump

For many Trump supporters — as well as the rest of the country — the surveillance state is one of the largest abominations to individual liberty seen in our lifetime, and that includes the passage of the Patriot Act and all the regulatory agencies that were conceived in the wake of 9/11. Without a firm anti-establishment stance against “big brother.,” draining the swamp is not only unlikely, it is simply impossible.

There is, of course, also the issue of Julian Assange. since Wikileaks committed itself to a campaign exposing Hillary Clinton in the final weeks of the election, the Republicans now view Assange as a hero.

Trump has also praised Assange, which seems appropriate since it is clear he has got an edge in demoralizing Hillary Camp. But truly speaking it is entirely unreasonable to attribute Trump’s election night victory to the dozens of “Podesta Email” leaks that were released over the last several weeks.

Now that Trump has publicly called Assange a hero for essentially doing the same thing Snowden did — it is possible that President Trump would consider pardoning Edward Snowden.

Again, at this point no one knows how this next administration will function. . pardoning Edward Snowden would be the ultimate stand against the establishment.

If President Trump holds true to his promise of restoring peaceful relations with Russia, where Edward Snowden has taken asylum for the past three and a half years, Snowden could very well become a bargaining chip. Of course, this is all speculation at the moment, but as non-interventionists seeking peace, we can only hope that improved relations with Russia do not come at the cost of the most heroic whistleblower of our time.

Trump’s legacy as president is a blank slate, it could go either way. If he wants to keep his current base of support and prove his skeptics wrong, he would be wise to pardon Edward Snowden, and dish out the first real blow to the establishment during his first days in office.

People are optimistic in this regard and expecting a positive step from Trump.

One Person commented “I would state that the best reason to pardon Edward Snowden is that he revealed secrets during a secretive United States power regime.

So far, what I have seen is that the revelations he has brought out are mostly about ways the government security apparatus has been doing to monitor and control Americans. This is exactly the opposite of the idea of the founding of this great nation. Our government has gotten off its principles, and needs to find its way back.

The pardoning of Edward Snowden, followed by the (hopeful) repeal of the (un-)Patriot Act would go a long way in that direction.

Snowden said any evaluation of the consequences of his leak of tens of thousands of National Security Agency and GCHQ documents in 2013 would show clearly that people had benefited.

“Yes, there are laws on the books that say one thing, but that is perhaps why the pardon power exists – for the exceptions, for the things that may seem unlawful in letters on a page but when we look at them morally, when we look at them ethically, when we look at the results, it seems these were necessary things, these were vital things,” he said.

“I think when people look at the calculations of benefit, it is clear that in the wake of 2013 the laws of our nation changed. The [US] Congress, the courts and the president all changed their policies as a result of these disclosures. At the same time there has never been any public evidence that any individual came to harm as a result.”

The campaign has received a further lift from Oliver Stone’s film, Snowden,  released in the US.  Over the weekend the director said he hoped the film would help shift opinion behind the whistleblower, and added his voice to the plea for a pardon.

Snowden has 2.3 million followers on Twitter giving him a huge platform to express his views

As far Snowden as a person is concerned, In Hong Kong in June 2013, when he had passed his documents to journalists, Snowden displayed an almost unnatural calm, as if resigned to his fate. On Monday he said that at that time he expected a “dark end” in which he was either killed or jailed in the US.

More than three years on, he appears cheerful and relaxed. He has avoided the fate of fellow whistleblower Chelsea Manning, who is in solitary confinement in the US. Snowden is free to communicate with supporters and chats online late into the night.

His 2.3 million followers on Twitter give him a huge platform to express his views. He works on tools to try to help journalists. He is not restricted to Moscow and has travelled around Russia, and his family in the US have been to visit him.

Donald Trump must hear the pleas and grant him pardon and justice.

Indians towards Modern Slavery

By Banning the Rs.500 & Rs.1000 Currency Notes

Mr. Modi has laid the Path for Making India a Cashless Economy..

Just for the Benefits of Global Bankers

How much it costed RBI to print a new, high-value currency note, and What is the impact on the exchequer when it is pulled out of circulation

0324_1edit

Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi is working under the influence of Global Bankers.”

The Demonetization of Rs 500 & Rs 1000 Currencies are a clear sign of Large American Bankers long term interest in taking Indian Economy in their Hands.

Money scarcity is the phenomenon of insufficient liquidity in the economy to finance all possible Trades.

Mr. Modi who is now aligned with American Bankers, “The Global Bankers” who are now aligned with Mr. Narendra Modi were known to have always focused on scarcity of money.

Go behind and find for yourself “Lending is the fundamental cause of money scarcity”.

This Money Scarcity will be the beginning of Modern day Slavery in India.

Money scarcity is pleasant to the Bankers. They prefer depressed economies, because it prevents the poor from becoming middle class. Bankers like cheap labor and people licking their boots for below sustenance job.

At What Cost

How much it costed RBI to print a new, high-value currency note, and What is the impact on the exchequer when it is pulled out of circulation

There is a significant cost in stopping issuance of Rs.1,000 and Rs.500 notes, and these costs should be weighed against what misuse of high-value notes costs the economy, before Mr. Modi should have made a decision.

What’s the Hurry in making India a Cashless Economy ?

These are all part of a Grand design to make people modern slaves of the High and Mighty, The Rulers and Governmental System.

More to come….

FBI in Hurry | Once again cleared Hillary Clinton

FBI announces it has not changed mind on charges

? ? ? ?

Just before the final hours of Polling FBI swung into action and cleared the path of White House for Hillary Clinton

FBI Director James Comey
FBI Director James Comey

Hillary Clinton received an unexpected boost to her campaign with just hours left before the US presidential election as the FBI announced on Sunday night that it had found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing in her use of a private email server.

James Comey, the FBI director, took the nation by surprise when he released a second letter in which he said the FBI had not changed its conclusions from its first report on Mrs Clinton in July.

The announcement, made as Americans prepared to go to the polls on Tuesday, lifted a shadow left hanging over the Democrat candidate. It followed a surge of support from Hispanic voters in the latest polls.

The announcement will raise further questions about the role of the FBI in the campaign, its impact on the democratic process and the timing of its statements.

The agency had already been plunged into controversy when the inquiry into the latest tranche of emails was announced during the course of the campaign.

Mr Comey said in his new letter: “Since my letter, the FBI investigative team has been working around the clock to process and review a large volume of emails from a device obtained in connection with an unrelated criminal investigation.

“During that process we reviewed all of the communications that were to or from Hillary Clinton while she was secretary of state. Based on our review, we have not changed our conclusions that we expressed in July with respect to Secretary Clinton. I am very grateful to the professionals at the FBI for doing an extraordinary amount of high-quality work in a short period of time.”

Mr Comey had announced nine days ago that new emails were being investigated. They had been found on the laptop of Anthony Weiner, the disgraced estranged husband of Huma Abedin, a top Clinton aide. He is under a separate investigation for allegedly sexting an underage girl.

The Clinton campaign immediately responded, welcoming the move.

“We are glad to see that he has found, as we were confident that he would, that he’s confirmed the conclusions that he reached in July,” said Jennifer Palmieri, the campaign’s communications manager. “And we’re glad that this matter is resolved.”

Last night’s announcement is expected to help Hillary further.

Kellyanne Conway, Mr Trump’s campaign manager, said Mr Comey had “mishandled the investigation from the beginning” and questioned the idea that the FBI could have carried out a thorough investigation in such a short time, but told MSNBC that the announcement would have no effect on the race.

Speaking to a rally in Minnesota, Mr Trump said: “She’s the most corrupt person ever to seek the presidency of the US. Clinton will be under investigation for a long time for the many crimes against her [name]. It’s a rigged system and she’s protected.”

The FBI was already under huge pressure from Democrats to explain why it took the unprecedented decision to make public so close to an election that it was investigating a new batch of emails related to Mrs Clinton.

Theresa May said on Sunday night that elections should be “calm and measured” and focused on issues as she spoke about the tone of the US presidential election.

Asked if she would repeat criticism of Mr Trump, voiced when she was home secretary, Mrs May said: “I take a simple view about the way in which I like to see campaigns being conducted; I like them to be conducted in a calm and measured way with proper consideration of the issues.”

Trump: ‘Hillary Clinton is guilty. She knows it, The FBI knows it. The people know it.’

In Moon township, west Pennsylvania, Trump lashed out at Hillary Clinton – calling her “the most corrupt person ever to run for president of the United States.” On the email investigation, he said: “Hillary Clinton is guilty. The FBI knows it. She knows it. The people know it… We are to deliver justice at the ballot box.” He accused the media of double standards and said the political system was “rigged.” Trump joked that if he’d been caught being fed debate questions in advance, as he says Clinton was, “they’d reinstitute the electric chair.”

Speaking to an audience of several thousand in an industrial area, he also promised to bring back steel and coal jobs. He said that refugee programmes will be suspended, which received a loud cheer”, and that Clinton created Isis by creating “a vacuum” of power in the Middle East. “We are fighting for every forgotten man, woman and child in this nation… Dream big. We are just two days away from the change you’ve been waiting for your entire life.”

Trump campaign manager: ‘Maybe the foundation is still under investigation’

Kellyanne Conway was asked repeatedly whether it was irresponsible for Donald Trump to speculate that the FBI had found the “motherload” on Hillary Clinton and that she would face indictment.

“Everybody speculated for nine days,” she said.

If FBI conclusions remain unchanged, that means she still was reckless & careless, still lied about classified info.

The Trump response

Donald Trump is speaking in Michigan, and lashing out against the “rigged system” that he claims allowed Hillary Clinton to avoid charges over her emails

Trump says FBI didn’t really review emails: “you cant review 650,000 emails in eight days. You cant do it folks. Hillary Clinton is guilty.”

Democrats asking questions

More from Ruth Sherlock, on the reaction from the other side of the aisle:

Democrats in congress warned last night that there would be “many questions” into the  FBI’s handling of the Hillary Clinton email scandal, as pressure mounted on its director to explain his actions.

Whilst Mr Comey’s announcement brought profound relief to Mrs Clinton’s campaign, it did little to stem the outrage of Democratic politicians who said Mr Comey’s initial intervention was illegitimately influencing the election, and accused the FBI of meddling in partisan politics.

“It’s impossible to fully undo the damage of the last nine days,” a senior Democrat said, speaking on condition of anonymity, in the hours after Mr Comey cleared Mrs Clinton’s name.

Tim Kaine, Mrs Clinton’s vice presidential running mate over the weekend attacked the FBI as being a “leaky sieve” that was “actively working” to hand Donald Trump the presidency.

“This just absolutely staggering,” he said, calling it a “massive blow” to the “integrity” of the agency.

But other Democrats had a harder time hiding their annoyance.

“Congrats to the FBI for working so hard to clear up the suspicion it needlessly created,” former Justice Department spokesman and Clinton supporter Matthew Miller wrote on Twitter. “Next time, maybe just stick to the rules though?”

Republican fury at Comey

Republicans in congress reacted with fury to the FBI director’s announcement clearing Hillary Clinton of criminal wrongdoing two days before the election.

James Comey caused a second shock to the presidential race on Sunday, stating the agency had not changed its conclusions on Mrs Clinton’s use of a private email whilst she was secretary of state.

“None of this changes the fact that the FBI continues to investigate the Clinton Foundation for corruption involving her tenure as secretary of state,” said Reince Priebus, the chairman of the Republican National Committee.

“Hillary Clinton should never be president.”

Paul Ryan, the Republican house speaker said that, despite Mr Comey’s findings, Mrs Clinton’s handling of classified information on a private email server when she was secretary of state has “put our nations secrets at risk”.

And Newt Gingrich, a top Republican ally of Donald Trump last night accused him  of caving to political pressure and questioned how he could come to the conclusion so quickly.

How we got here

The winding road that led us to Mr Comey’s announcement today

  1. Congress probes Hillary Clinton over her role in the Benghazi attack that killed a US ambassador
  2. During that investigation, it is determined that Mrs Clinton used a private email server to conduct government business
  3. The FBI launches an investigation into whether Mrs Clinton knowingly put America’s secrets at risk through her email practices
  4. James Comey announces in July that “no reasonable prosecutor” would pursue criminal charges against Mrs Clinton
  5. Mr Comey sends a letter to members of Congress on October 28 stating that new “pertinent” emails had been found, and that Mrs Clinton is once again under investigation
  6. It emerges that the emails were taken from the laptop of Anthony Weiner, the disgraced former Congressman and estranged husband to Huma Abedin, a top Clinton aide
  7. Donald Trump calls the news “bigger than Watergate”, Democrats accuse Mr Comey of inappropriately influencing the election
  8. Mr Comey announces that nothing was found in the new emails that changed his decision from July

Trump: ‘Clinton corrupt, no matter what FBI says’

Donald Trump has described Hillary Clinton as the “most corrupt person ever to seek the Presidency” less than half an hour after the FBI cleared her.

The Republican candidate refused to change tack despite the announcement by the head of the FBI, saying that “it’s a rigged system and she’s protected”.

Mr Trump had put the FBI’s investigation at the heart of his campaign and enjoyed a surge in the polls after it was formally re-opened last month.

The rally in Minneapolis was part of a dash through six states in the final 48 hours of the election campaign, Mr Trump was defiant.

Speaking to 4,500 people in an airport hanger, he said: “She’s the most corrupt person ever to seek the Presidency of the US. Clinton will be under investigation for a long time for the many crimes against her. It’s a rigged system and she’s protected.”

Trump and Clinton spokespeople argue it out on Twitter

Kellyanne Conway, Mr Trump’s campaign manager, responds to Clinton spokesman Brian Fallon on Twitter.

She says if the Clinton camp was so confident of the outcome why did they attack Mr Comey over the last week.

Still, the Trump camp is going to have to accept they’ve lost this one. Mrs Clinton is definitely not going to be locked up.

Paul Ryan says Hillary Clinton still “put the nation’s secrets at risk”

Paul Ryan, the Republican House Speaker, said: “Regardless of this decision the undisputed finding of the FBI’s investigation is that Secretary Clinton put our nation’s secrets at risk and in doing so compromised our national security. She simply believes she’s above the law and always plays by her own rules.

“Fortunately, the American people have the opportunity to ensure Secretary Clinton never gets her hands on classified information again. Let’s bring the Clinton era to an end by voting for Donald Trump on Tuesday.”

What Pollsters say

Though Clinton’s lead in the polls had been shrinking prior to then, her aides and several pollsters said that the news won’t help the dampened enthusiasm among Democratic voters and further hurt her standing.

What about early voters?

Once again, a late development in this election leaves early voters scratching their heads.

The effect of Sunday’s news on the election is hard to predict. Millions of people have already cast ballots during the days in which all that was known was that the FBI was re-investigating Clinton’s emails.

Additionally, GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump and his surrogates have spent the past week arguing that an indictment against Clinton was in the offing. They even put out television advertisement highlighting the role played by Anthony Weiner in the saga.

The Clinton campaign was relatively muted in its initial response to the news.

More than 40 million people have already voted.

Those who did so over the last week did so with the knowledge that the FBI was investigating a new batch of potentially explosive Clinton-related emails. Now it’s not.

The question is did it affect anyone’s vote?

Gun sales on the rise fearing a Clinton win

Gun sales on the rise in fear of a Clinton win

Gun sellers report increasing sales as voters prepare for possibility of president who backs firearms restrictions.

New Orleans, Louisiana – In the run-up to the November 8 elections in the US, The Gun Market already noticed an increase in gun sales in some states of America. Some customers are worried if Hillary Clinton will be the 45th US president.

During her campaign, the Democratic candidate has said it is necessary to further regulate gun sales to lower the amount of deaths related to firearms. Her husband, former president Bill Clinton, signed an anti-gun law in 1994, banning assault rifles for a period of 10 years – a ban Hillary Clinton has vowed to reinstate.

Although Gun sellers have seen gun sales growing before. After the Sandy Hook massacre, when a 20-year-old man killed 20 children and six staff members at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, using an AR-15 type of semi-automatic rifle was one such instance.

The same day, President Barack Obama gave a speech stating action had to be taken, regardless of politics. That month, the amount of background checks performed by the FBI for gun sales peaked at 2.7 million, compared with 1.5 million the same month the year before.

When someone buys a gun, the seller is obliged to perform a background check with the FBI to make sure the buyer has no criminal record. These serve as a reliable indicator of the trends in gun sales, although they do not translate directly into gun sales.

In the following days, Markets completely sold out of AR-15s. Shopkeepers could not even order them any more from a manufacturer. As people feared a ban on these assault rifles, similar to the 10-year ban Bill Clinton signed, people came to the shop to try to buy them before they would disappear from the shelves.

If Hillary Clinton were to win,  a ban on assault rifles just does not make sense. Because many pro-gun Americans thinks the name “assault rifle” should not be applied to these kind of rifles, because it gives them a bad name.

A Gun Pro says “We don’t even take an AR-15 for deer hunting, for it will only hurt the animal instead of killing it, “School goers can shot in amateur hunting . It’s fun to shoot; it’s just a sporting rifle. It’s not the big bad weapon they say it is.”

But a seller says “panic buying” on the scale has not been seen in anticipation of political changes before like it happened this year.

Driven by fear of new amendments

Qualls and Schmitt show different kinds of rifles
Qualls and Schmitt show different kinds of rifles

Over this past annual quarter, from July to September 2016, the FBI recorded the most background checks for this quarterly period since it started to keep track of these checks in 1999. Both Smith & Wesson and Sturm Ruger, two major US firearms manufacturers, reported unprecedented sales for this period.

In a gun store in Alabama, co-owner Tracy Schmitt, who is originally from New York state, says people worry about an “oppressive government”. Gun ownership is the only way to keep the power in the hands of the people, he says.

With Hillary Clinton succeeding a Democratic president in office, Schmitt believes there is a possibility gun control laws will be implemented quickly.

“Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton work together,” Schmitt says, referring to the current president’s endorsement of Clinton. “So even considering she would only be inaugurated in January, it is possible Obama would pass an executive order, which makes it impossible for people to buy arms before Clinton gets to the White House.”

The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution states: “… the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”.

Fear of laws to regulate this Amendment, say sales people, has led to people stocking up on equipment.

When he was back in New York state, Schmitt experienced the increases in sales from previous administrative actions. Now, Schmitt says, many of his customers have been stocking up on ammunition in the past few weeks and coming by to get old guns fixed and oiled.

“Barack Obama has been a great firearms salesman,” he laughs, referring to the peaks in sales of 2012 – the year of the Sandy Hook shooing and Obama’s re-election. “But Bill Clinton was the number-one salesman before.”

Schmitt and his co-owner, Darrell Qualls, say the vagueness of future gun regulations is what worries people. Hillary Clinton says she supports reasonable gun control and pledges to get military-style weapons off the streets. But according to Qualls, it is unclear which firearms would be considered military weapons once new regulations come into place.

Qualls shows an old rifle that was used by the Spanish during the civil war in the 1930s; then he shows a sniper rifle. “Most firearms were originally designed for the military,” he says. “Which one of these two

will be prohibited?”

Disarming America?

Not everybody in the United States believes the AR-15 rifles are as light a weapon as some Gun Pros portrays them to be.

Such a rifle can be easily modified to hold up to 100 bullets, which can be shot as quickly as the shooter can pull the trigger.

The same accounts for similar rifles, such as the Sig Sauer MCX, which was used in the recent shooting at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida – in an audio recording of this shooting 24 shots are heard in nine seconds.

During her campaign, Hillary Clinton has repeatedly mentioned 33,000 as the average number of gun-related deaths per year in the United States. This number can be seen as misleading, though, as it includes suicides, which account for more or less two thirds of the deaths.

Still, the US has a gun-related homicide rate of 3.43 per 100,000 people per year, which puts the per capita homicide rate between countries such as Peru and Montenegro, but still a fraction of the gun homicide rates of countries such as Venezuela or Honduras.

The countries with the lowest per capita homicide rate – zero – are Iceland and Japan. The countries on both extremes, Iceland and Japan in comparison to Venezuela and Honduras, all require a licence for gun ownership and registered gun owners.

At a recent gun show in Robertsdale, Alabama, two men in their 60s walked around with rifles slung over their shoulders. These men, called John and Sam, came to find potential buyers for their rifles. Walking past tables full of handguns, semi-automatic and army-paraphernalia, they talked to prospective customers.

Someone offered $250 for the .22 calibre Magnum rifle Sam carried. He was hoping to find a better offer, so they exchanged phone numbers and agreed to call later that day in case he did not find this.

Official weapon dealers are obliged to perform an online background check of their clients with the FBI, which is done on the spot.

However, private persons can sell guns without performing such checks, as long as they are not aware of the buyer having a criminal history. Bill Clinton called this the “gun show loophole”, which he as well as the two following presidents, George W Bush and Obama, tried to close, and Hillary Clinton has pledged to close.

Linda Clifton, who runs a gun shop in rural Alabama with her husband, a retired military officer, believes carrying a gun has become necessary with crime rates going up in the countryside. They organise classes for costumers to learn how to use guns for self-defence.

She proudly explains how one of her costumers, a young mother, managed to chase away three young men who were following her in a parking lot of a local Walmart supermarket.

“I’m sure Clinton will try to do something. But the more she runs off with her mouth, the more people are gonna purchase guns,” Clifton says. “But mostly what she says is just election talk; trying to win votes. Besides, before we would ever give up our guns, we would have a civil war in this country. They would not want that.”

It is a recurring remark in gun shops and by gun owners as well as sellers at gun shows in Alabama and Mississippi: whoever touches the Second Amendment risks gearing the country towards civil unrest.

Sam and John at the gun show have stocked up on ammunition, to be prepared if this would end up in civil war, they say.

During the same gun show, a man selling bulletproof vests, who does not want to be named, says many Americans are fed up with the way the country evolves.  “If Hillary Clinton gets elected, I advise foreigners not to come to this country,” he warns. “All hell will break lose.”

Banning a certain type of firearm is one thing, but would the local law enforcement strictly enforce new laws?

Officer Don Hopkins is an investigator and police spokesman in the little town of Waynesboro, Mississippi. Though he does not believe the Second Amendment would ever be changed, he would not want be the one to go to people’s houses and take assault rifles from them if gun ownership were to be banned in the US.

“It’s simply not gonna happen,” he says in his office at the police station.

“If you disarm honest people, all you gonna have is armed dishonest people. If you ask around, over 90 percent of law enforcement will rather see their citizens armed.

Hence in some states people are in relaxed mode ”

“You see, we don’t believe Hillary Clinton could win, so no one was really panicking.”
